It's amazing what goes into making something effortless.

"No performance is a perfect performance but some performances allow for the feeling of perfection. Achieving this moment of ecstasy easily validates all the pain and struggle of the art form by taking us, and possibly our audience, for a moment to a world beyond our own."

"We live only to dance. If living were not an essential prerequisite, we would abstain."

Stamina Science

When Noelani Pantastico joined Les Ballets de Monte Carlo in 2008 after 10 years with Pacific Northwest Ballet, she wanted to increase her cross-training routine. “I needed more cardio to improve my stamina,” she says. “Most dancers don’t realize that class doesn’t actually work our hearts as much as we think it does.”

Typical Cardio Routine: Pantastico warms up with five to 10 minutes of easy walking on a slight incline on the treadmill, then increases the speed to a fast-paced walk for 30 to 45 minutes. Next she gets on the elliptical for 15 minutes at the maximum resistance she can handle, alternating between pushing as hard as she can for 60 seconds and 30 seconds at an easier pace. She then cuts the resistance to nothing and stays on for another 15 minutes to cool down. “Our full-length Sleeping Beauty is quite a marathon, but because of my
cardio routine, this time I had the stamina.”

Off-Season Adjustment: “I’ll stay on the treadmill and elliptical for longer. I might even run for a bit. Afterwards I’ll lift some light weights (two-to five-pounders) to work my shoulders and triceps.”

Additional Exercises: “After breakfast, I stretch and do yoga poses at home for about an hour to get my body ready for the day (I always get to work at the last minute). Also, whenever I have a moment at the studio or the gym I squeeze in some Pilates exercises—things I’ve learned over the years that my body likes.”

Number of Gym Days: “One to four times a week, depending on how much I’m dancing. My boyfriend and I made a vow: If we don’t sweat at work, we have to go to the gym.”
